A Personal History of Dutch Chess and the Players Who Shaped It

The Art of Living: Memories of Two Chess Friends is written by Grandmaster Jan Timman and International Master Hans Böhm. The book takes the form of a dialogue between two lifelong chess friends.

Both began as promising players and later achieved success at home and abroad. Timman rose to world number two in 1982, behind Anatoly Karpov. Böhm built a career in chess media on television, radio and in the press.

The authors look back on the Flower Power era, the Cold War, the 1972 World Championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, and the rise of the chess computer. They also recall their travels, encounters, triumphs and setbacks. The book suits chess fans interested in post-war chess history and in the personal stories behind famous players.
