The author Richard Reti conceived it as a collection of games in which he portrayed the masters from Anderssen to the then world champion Alekhine in chronological order. At the same time, Reti compiled a history of chess ideas. He had recognized early on that one should study the historical development of chess in order to gain a better understanding of chess. In his excellent commentaries on the games, Reti devoted himself primarily to the underlying plans and ideas, thereby conveying his profound knowledge to the reader in an understandable way. The conception of the book is clear from the following quote: \''There is much more chess truth in the ideas than in the variations. Although these can be found printed in black and white in thick, scientific books, they usually prove to be wrong after a few years, sometimes even before they come out of the press.
