If perpetual check is offered in an unclear position, it is as if the position itself were offering you a draw. And, comparable to an offer from the opponent, this unspoken version also represents an intervention in the ongoing thought process. And the decision associated with it (as with the conventional offer of a draw) not only brings with it a great deal of responsibility, but also more or less severe uncertainty. If you carry out perpetual check - or allow your opponent to carry one out - later analysis may reveal that the opposite decision would have brought half a point more.

In view of the obvious importance, it would hardly have been wrong to dedicate a separate book to perpetual check with all its facets (such as perpetual check search, perpetual check trap, perpetual check avoidance). And one that not only offers rich and excellent chess entertainment, but also provides anyone who is interested in learning with a wealth of working material.

Lothar Nikolaiczuk was very active in the 1970s and 1980s - not entirely unsuccessfully, if you consider a 5th place in the German Championship in 1978 - a shared victory in Lugano in 1979 (together with GM Mariotti - ahead of GM L. Schmid) and a solo victory in the Dortmund Open in 1985 (ahead of GM Flear). After retiring from tournament chess, he lived for 15 years as a freelance writer in various African countries and has lived on the Indonesian island of Bali since 2005. With 25 published titles, he can be considered one of the most productive chess authors in the world.
