This unusual book provides an original and very personal insight into German and international chess events of the past few years. The author, Harald Keilhack, proves to be a subtle but also critical observer, a competent and witty commentator: he knows how to put not only the most gripping games, but also the characters involved with all their peculiarities in the right light. The reader is not only given a piece of chess history. The book offers more: it reviews the entire chess scene of the past few years with all its ups and downs, its developments and fault lines.\r\nThe idiosyncratic, journalistically pointed style of presentation is no coincidence: the book is based on Harald Keilhack's columns in the Stuttgarter Zeitung, whose weekly chess column the author has been in charge of since 1997.\r\nAll contributions have been revised and summarized into thematically homogeneous chapters. The book focuses on curiosities such as king's migration in the middle game, stalemates and under-promotions - many of these interesting games have never been published anywhere else. Other chapters deal with computers, child prodigies or the greats of the past. All of this is supplemented by overviews and result tables as well as numerous excellent caricatures by Frank Stiefel.\r\nFM Harald Keilhack is, in addition to his work for the Stuttgarter Zeitung, the editor-in-chief at the chess publisher Kania. As an author, he has previously published opening monographs such as the "Tarrasch Defense". He has also made a name for himself as a literary expert with his reviews in the magazine "Schach".
