\r\nI first sat across the board from Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik in 1940\r\nin the final of the 12th USSR Championship. Later we fought many more battles, the most important of which were the match tournaments in 1941 and 1948. The climax of our disputes was undoubtedly the match series between 1954 and 1958. The chess world had a well-thought-out system at that time, because the duels for the World Chess Championship were held every three years. At this point it should be noted that despite our different views on chess, we both saw chess not only as a sporting competition, but as an art and strove to conjure up perfect works of art on the chessboard.
